This event supports the mandates given by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in providing continuous training and manpower skill-set development to its constituents. Gawad KALASAG (Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing at Kaligtasan) Search for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Humanitarian Assistance was first established in 1998 and has since remained an inspiration for promoting and implementing disaster risk reduction and management, climate change adaptation (DRRM-CCA).
A few years later, in 2020, the GK Seal and Special Awards for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Humanitarian Assistance were developed to derive a mandatory assessment of all stakeholders inclined toward DRRM-CCA operations and recognize the efforts of departments that portray earnest performances of duty.
